Must Have Photography Gadgets

The right equipment is an absolute necessity to perform anything properly and the field of photography is no exception to this rule. In today’s article, we shall be discussing different gadgets and photography tools which will help you to attempt most of the generic genres of photography. This list will provide assistance to not just new and aspiring photographers but also to people who just want to enjoy this field as a hobby with the limited budget. So, without wasting any more time, let’s jump into the list.

MANUAL SETTINGS ARE THE KEY

It goes without saying that if you wish to play basketball, the most important thing required to do so is to have a Basketball. J The same applies to photography. A good camera is the number one thing required. Now having said that we also feel that mostly cameras are overly stressed for good photography; which is not true in most cases. It’s the photographer behind the machine that makes beautiful shots rather than the machine itself. So, while you try to choose a good camera, don’t overthink the options with the most expensive ones available. A mid-range DSLR which has the capability to set the settings manually and has a replaceable lens would suffice. The key is that you can maneuver the triangle of exposure as per need; which includes Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO.

FULL RANGE OF FOCAL LENGTH

Focal length is the basic description of a Photographic Lens. The focal length represents the viewing angle in a picture. This means that it’s the focal length that determines how much of the scene will be captured and its magnification. With its measuring unit being millimeters, higher values of mm mean lesser area in view (more zoomed in) and vice versa. So, you need a set of lens which covers a good amount of the focal length range. Even though you will have hundreds of lens options available in the market, we shall recommend only two most elementary lens which will cover most of the scenarios. The basic 18-55mm lens is recommended to cover the wide angle & portrait needs. 18-24mm range will be used for wide angle shots, which are requirement primarily for landscape & architecture photography. Higher mm range of this lens can be useful for portrait photography. The second lens recommendation would be any lens which has focal length greater than 150mm. Such a lens is called a telephoto lens and will be used for sports and wild life photography.

TRIPOD

Tripods are one the most important photography equipment and are also the ones which are immensely neglected. Most new and amateur photographers look at it as an addition weight to carry rather than considering the amazing advantages it offers. We strongly suggest a good stable tripod. Tripods are used in all kinds of long exposure photography. Have you seen those amazing cotton candy affect pictures of running water? Have you been fascinated by those light trailing photographs? Have you ever wished to capture your own light painting photographs? If yes, none of these are possible without a good tripod. So, invest generously in a good tripod.

INTERVALOMETER

If you do not have a DSLR that supports interval photography and are interested in doing time lapse photography, intervalometer is an inexpensive device to control the number of pictures taken in a particular amount of time. Tripods are also required for time lapse photography. Most intervalometer can also be used as remote triggers.

EXTERNAL LIGHTING

In many cases, the built-in flash of DSLRs is not enough to illuminate the scene properly. This is especially true for night time photography. An external flash is then used to properly illuminate the subject. It is recommended that external flash which supports off camera operation is chosen; otherwise, a wireless trigger is also required to operate the external flash while keeping it off the camera for angular lighting. Angular lighting gives dimension and depth to the picture; making it dynamic and eye-catching.

EXTENSION TUBE

The best option available for macro photography is to buy a specialized macro lens build specifically for this purpose. But even the cheapest macro lens would cost a good solid amount. So, for people who want to dive into this domain for the sake of enjoyment & fun and still desire to get astounding macro images, different cheaper options are also available. The best inexpensive replacement option available for a macro lens are extension tubes. Extension tubes do not compromise the quality or exposure of the picture by adding any optical element, nor do they increase the complexity of the picture taking process. We suggest that you choose an auto focusing extension tube that supports your camera body. Manual extension tubes are harder to operate and hence should be avoided.

POLARIZER FILTER

Polarizer filters are also an important accessory to own, especially for landscape photographers dealing with reflective areas like water bodies. A polarizer filter cuts down the glare and reflections in the picture, making is much clearer and mesmerizing.

ND FILTER

A neutral density filter is used to cut down the amount of light entering the camera body. A good ND filter is important for photographers who wish to capture movement in bright day light.

REFLECTOR

Reflectors are especially important for portrait photographers. Reflectors can be used highly effectively to remove unwanted dark areas in a portrait.  Especially when conducting a photographic session in daylight, reflectors can be used effectively to dodge undesired harsh shades.

VERTICAL GRIP

Photography is all about capturing the right moment. Many times, you need to adapt your frame orientation quickly in the field. Vertical grips offer an additional capture button to make vertical handling and capturing more smooth and easy. Vertical grip can also act as a container for an additional battery which is highly useful for traveling photographers.

HIGH-SPEED MEMORY CARD

Never take memory cards for granted. After all they are the medium where your piece of art is saved. It is strongly recommended to use a high-speed memory card from a good brand. Opting a cheaper quality memory card will not only affect the speed of your camera operation but will also put your hard work at risk, in case of malfunction.

CLEANING KIT

Camera and lens cleaning kit is also an important part of one’s photography gear collection. Clean equipment means higher quality images and longer life for the equipment. Lens cleaning pens, high-quality lens brushes, air blower cleaners, lens cleaning tissue papers, lens glass & camera mirror cleaning solutions and microfiber cleaning cloths are basic cleaning kit components.

HAPPY SHOOTING!

Now we can increase this list to as many photography products as we wish but as per our recommendation, the above mentioned are the bare minimum for any aspiring photographer to touch most of the amazing genres of photography. But Remember! It’s the photographer that produces spellbinding photos with his skill, creativity, and vision; not his gear. On this note, we wrap up the article and wish you the best of photographic pleasure.

Happy Shooting!
